EIJING: A ruling by China，s supreme court divesting wives of the right of co-ownership of property in the event of divorce has stirred up major controversy , as it changed the country，s  time  honoured  marriage law almost overnight.

北京：一个由中国最高法推出的法律解释剥夺了妻子在离婚后对夫妻共有财产分享的权利，这激起了巨大的争议，它在一夜间颠覆了中国过去传统的婚姻法观念

The changed marriage law, which took effect on August 13, stipulates that houses bought on mortgage by one party prior to wedlock are to be deemed as the personal property of the registered owner, rather than the joint estate of the couple.

修改后的婚姻法在8月13号开始生效，修改后的内容规定其中一方当事人在婚前按揭贷款买的房被视为登记拥有人的财产，而不是夫妻的共同财产。

The judicial ruling, intended to resolve real estate disputes in divorce cases, depriving wives， of co-ownership of a couple，s home will make them feel both insecure and unromantic, women，s rights groups have said.

女权组织说：最高司法推出的这项婚姻法解释，试图解决离婚案中对于不动产的争议，剥夺妇女对于夫妻共同的房子将使他们感到不安全和不浪漫。

 Passed without any public debate, it challenges the traditional Chinese view that to secure a marriage the groom has to buy an apartment, which has become increasingly expensive , Liu Yan, a lawyer on marital affairs said.

 For a Chinese man marriage is impossible without him owning an apartment, the right over which was shared in the event of divorce as per the old rules.

对于一个中国男人来说，没有房子是不可能结婚的。按照旧的婚姻法，离婚时，房子的产权将被分享。

This article make this law seemingly anti-women but that is not the case. With this law, women who bought properties before marriage (often parents help out) will not lose homes to lousy ex-husbands after divorce. Since Chinese women work and often hold better jobs than their husbands this is a common scenario. If anything this law is anti-gold diggers, which applies to everyone.

China，s recent male/female birth ratios are not all that much different than India. The difference is that Chinese are far more flexible in marrying members from other cultures than Indians. Hence you see more Chinese marrying Russians (north) and Vietnamese (south). Indian males of the lower caste, and there are hundreds of millions of them, on the other hand are totally screwed.
