Our program also hosts a popular Financial Engineering Practitioners Seminar on Monday nights, at which Wall Street and industry practitioners present seminars on their recent research or particular specialty, and where students can hear firsthand about life in the financial world.

MSFE CURRICULUM 2010-11

For the class of 2010-2011, the MSFE Program requires the completion of 36 points on a full time basis only.  Students start with an 8 week part I summer session (July 6- August 27, 2010), and continues through the 2010-2011 academic year.  Students may complete the program in May 2011, August 2011 or December 2011.  

All courses are for 3 credits, unless stated otherwise.

The curriculum below assumes that the student will complete the degree by May 2010.

The Department requires that students achieve grades of B- or higher in each of the four fundamental core courses offered in the first summer. Poor performance in these courses is indicative of inadequate preparation and is very likely to lead to serious problems in completing the program. As a result, students failing to meet this criterion will be asked to withdraw from the program.

MSFE CAREER INFORMATION

Located in the financial center of the world, the ColumbiaMSFE Program provides its graduates with both a strong theoretical and apractical foundation in all aspects of financial engineering, from knowledge offinancial markets and instruments through financial modeling in a variety ofareas, programming and data analysis. The Program commences in July and is flexible, allowing students tograduate within one academic year by May, the end of the summer or December,based on their educational and career objectives. The first half of the programfocuses on core courses and fundamental skills; the second half provides inelectives in a wide variety of areas on both the buy- and sell-sides of thefinancial industry.

Columbia University is dedicated to assisting students inprofessional development, providing resources that include not only educationbut also resume and cover letter writing, developing professional appeal andinterview/networking skills.

The Columbia MSFE Program has had a good track record placing graduates in full time positions and internships. The full-time placement statistics for students who started in July 2007 (completed the Program in 2008) are listed below. The July 2008 career information is also available.
